Dieter Ruckhaberle

Short biography

Since the 1960s, Ruckhaberle has had a decisive influence on the (West) Berlin art scene and campaigned tirelessly for better working conditions for artists. He was a co-initiator of IG Medien, the Künstlersozialkasse and co-founder of art institutions such as nGbK and the Staatliche Kunsthalle Berlin, of which he was director for many years. As an artist, he created an extensive painterly oeuvre from 1958 onwards, ranging between representational and abstraction, which poetically and critically reflects his time. He died in 2018 and left behind his artistic legacy as well as the Künstlerhof Frohnau, a large studio complex in the north of Berlin that has provided affordable studio space for artists since 1998.
